Anthro in the Museum: Betsy Gibbons

What is a museum?:

To keep it short and sweet, I see it as an institution that translates foreign cultures for its parent community.

For our first entry in Anthro in the Museum, I was able to sit down and interview Betsy Gibbons who is the Assistant Museum Educator and High School Internship Coordinator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! Listen in to our conversation on the differences between national and local museums, a tip on how to survive art history courses as an undergraduate, and more!

Here are the two sources mentioned:

Introduction: Museums and Multiculturalism by Steven D. Lavine and Ivan Karp in Exhibiting Cultures, edited by Ivan Karp and Steven D. Lavine (PDF here):http://halleinstitute.emory.edu/karp/articles/museums_exhibitions/1991_intro_exhibiting_cultures.pdf

Online resource (more specific to museum education): http://artmuseumteaching.com/

“[It’s a] digital community and collaborative online forum for reflecting on issues of teaching, learning, and experimental practice in the field of art museum education!” – Betsy Gibbons

And as always you can be rest assured, more are on the way!

Sincerely,

Your fellow anthropologist-in-training
